Burger Resigns From Cowley Board Of Trustees; Third Resignation Since April

Another Cowley College Board of Trustees member has resigned, according to a press release from Cowley College Tuesday.

Nancy Burger joins Bob Juden and Jill Long in resigning from the board. Juden and Long abruptly announced their departures in April

Burger narrowly won her four-year term in November 2019

Monday night, the college held a candidate forum at its main campus in Ark City. The meeting was held in the Wright Room in order to safely increase community access with an approximate gathering limitation of approximately 60 people while maintaining adequate social distancing.

The meeting was also live streamed to comply with social distancing guidelines.

The board heard from six individuals who have submitted letters of interest to fill the two vacancies, following the resignations of former Trustees Bob Juden and Jill Long. In addition, the Board acknowledged the recent resignation of Burger.

The list of trustee candidates include: Dr. Steve Abrams, Michael Bergagnini — who narrowly lost to Burger in 2019 — JoLynn Foster, Richard Rush, Dennis K. Shurtz, and Christopher L. Swan. Both Foster and Shurtz have previous experience on the Board.

Anita Judd-Jenkins, who served in the Kansas House of Representatives as the representative of the 80th district from 2017 to 2019, emceed the event. She asked each candidate seven questions and then gave each individual one minute for additional comments.

Two of the three trustee vacancies will be filled at the next Cowley College Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for Monday, July 20 at 6 p.m. in the Wright Room.

Those chosen will serve the remainder of the vacated terms and could then stand for election.
