Winfield police chief: Lock your car doors

A number of vehicle burglaries has prompted Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore to encourage residents to lock their vehicle doors.

“It is such a simple security measure but could be highly effective in keeping your belongings safe,” he said.

Two men have been blamed for at least four vehicle burglaries early Saturday morning, James E. Speer, Jr., 50, and Cameron L. Hindman, 22, both of Winfield were arrested for burglary and auto theft, according to DeVore.

The alleged thieves were caught after one of the victims saw the men burglarizing a vehicle in the 1100 block of E. Seventh Street, and called police. Officers found two suspects matching the description provided by a victim in the 800 block of E. Seventh Street.

DeVore said the two suspects entered at least four vehicles and attempted to enter several more in the area. The property taken was scattered across several lawns and in the street.

“The victim did an excellent job of keeping the suspects in view and watched them as they entered vehicle after vehicle as they traveled down the street,” DeVore said. “The victim was also instrumental in the description of the suspects as they looked through her vehicle.”
