County OKs deal for rural fire protection

Cowley County Commissioners approved a new five-year agreement between Rural Fire District No. 5 and the city of Arkansas City during a commission meeting Tuesday night.

Arkansas City commissioners also met Tuesday night and were expected to approve the agreement as well.

The district encompasses nearly 200 square miles and has 3,000 911 “address points”, which include both homes and businesses, according to Ark City Fire Chief Randy Leach.

The service will be provided by the Ark City Fire Department and will cost property owners seven mills for each of three years and 7.5 mills during the remaining two years.

The district also has to make a one-time lump sum payment of approximately $50,000.
