Two people were critically injured Monday morning in a one-vehicle accident under the E. Chestnut Avenue overpass in Arkansas City. EagleMed air ambulance picked up at least one patient at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Ark City Fire Chief Randy Leach said paramedics transported?two male patients. “When fire and EMS arrived, two patients had been ejected from the vehicle and the vehicle was on fire,” Leach said.

The car was in the eastbound lane on the east side of the underpass, he said.

“We have an idea as to what happened but we don’t want to speculate on anything at this point,” Ark City Police Chief Sean Wallace said.

The accident occurred about 9:15 a.m. The accident is being investigated by the police department. The railroad company will be notified since the accident occurred on railroad property, Wallace said.
