Weekend thieves strike home and businesses

Thousands of dollars worth of car parts and tools was stolen this past weekend from one private residence and two businesses located in rural Cowley County, according to reports released by the sheriff’s office this week.

A homeowner at 11895 101st Road, Winfield, told officers thieves took $1,350 worth of truck and car parts he was storing in a field behind his home. The missing items include a 1970-1971 model Ford Torino hood and trunk lid. The hood was a gray primer color and the lid was orange and labeled with black decals including the word “Ford”. The theft was reported Saturday. The homeowner’s full name was not included in the report.

Sunday officers received a report of a burglary at Tooth Acres, 4000 U.S. 166 in Arkansas City. The owner, Nick Rogers, showed officers where someone had used a prying tool such as a flathead screwdriver to gain entrance into a barn on the property. Significant damage was caused by the pry tool and a chain saw, battery charger, bolt cutters, copper kettle, various small tools and 150 feet of copper wire had been taken. The tools were valued at $860 and at least $100 damage was done to the door, the report said.

A second burglary was reported Monday at American Waste Management, 21909 Southwest B in Winfield. Suspects reportedly entered a building and removed a number of tools. The thieves gained access to the tools by pushing open a large bay door and pulling their vehicle into the building. An aluminum wall was also pushed open. The business has not yet estimated their losses, according to the sheriff’s office.
