Frozen rain makes for slick morning driving

Tiny ice pellets accumulated overnight and made for treacherous driving for early-morning commuters Thursday.

By noon, sand trucks, bobcats, shovels and snow blowers could be seen all over Winfield. But cutting through the layer of ice was not always easy.

Conditions made for many a stuck vehicle, including some emergency vehicles. Barclay Wilt, of the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, was out in the weather early and said road conditions seemed “kind of like you were driving in sand.”

The weather service says there is a chance of freezing rain the rest of the day. It could turn to rain by Friday.
