Crime Stoppers looks for stone sign vandals

Cowley County Crime Stoppers is looking for help finding whoever is responsible for defacing the “Winfield” rock sign on U.S. 77 north of town.

The incident was reported May 5 when someone called to say the sign, which is a display of carefully arranged stones on a hillside, had been damaged. An unknown suspect or suspects destroyed the sign and rearranged the rocks to spell “A.C.”

Remaining rocks were scattered about the area. Cowley County Sheriff’s investigators believe the vandalism occurred between 7 p.m. May 2 and 8 a.m. May 4.

The property owner estimated the damage at $2,000. Volunteers have since repaired the sign.

The sheriff’s department is asking for help finding anyone responsible.
