Read: 2 hurt in Thurs. crash conscious, alert

Seat belts likely helped a pair of Cowley County residents avoid life-threatening injuries in an accident on U.S. 77 just north of Strother Field Thursday morning.

"I was able to speak with both drivers in the (emergency room), they were conscious and alert," Cowley County Undersheriff Don Read said. "They were getting checked out and probably having some X-rays taken as a precaution but I don’t believe there were any injuries considered life threatening."

Tricia Denson, 37, Winfield, was northbound on 77 when she stopped to turn west on Country Club Road.

She turned into the southbound lane of the highway too soon and her 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser collided with a Honda Accord driven by Lacey Pool, 23, of Arkansas City.

Both women were taken by ambulance to William Newton Hopsital for treatment.

The accident is still under investigation and citations may be issued, Read said. Both drivers were wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash.
