SMOKE OUT: Commish to vote on ban Mon.

Cigarette smoking in public places in Winfield – including bars and restaurants – would be against the law by January if city commissioners approve a ban that’s on the agenda tonight.

City officials have been crafting a proposal since the issue of a clean air ordinance was pitched to the commission earlier this year. They’ll consider a final draft at their regular meeting set for 7 tonight at City Hall.

The ban covers all public buildings and any private building open to the general public. Exceptions are made only for outdoor spaces and private residences.

As it’s written the ordinance would take effect Jan. 2, 2009.

Check back with NewsCow tonight for an update on the vote.
