Ark City High School get breakthrough award

Arkansas City High School has been named a National Breakthrough School, according to a statement from school district officials.

School officials received word of the honor late last week. Just 10 secondary schools nationwide will receive the same honor.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals, in conjunction with MetLife Insurance recognizes mid-level and high schools that are high achieving or dramatically improving student achievement while serve a large number of students living in poverty.

Each Breakthrough School will receive a $5,000 grant and be featured in the association’s monthly magazine, Principal Leadership. Principals of Breakthrough Schools will participate in dissemination efforts at the NASSP Annual Convention and other venues.

USD 470 Superintendent Ron Ballard noted that the award is one of the most highly respected among educators.

"We are tremendously proud of our students, faculty, staff, administration and our community support-all were involved in creating a learning environment that has now been recognized as one of the most successful, nationwide," he said.
