Ark City breaking ground on sports complex

Officials in Arkansas City are set to break ground on construction of a new $7.7 million sports complex that will be paid for with funds from a bond issue approved by voters last year.

A kick-off ceremony is set for10 a.m. Saturday just northwest of Ark City High School, according to district spokesperson Alisha Call. The new complex will house a stadium for football, soccer and track as well as a new tennis complex and a pair of new softball fields.

Upgrades also will be made to the existing softball and baseball fields.

USD 470 Superintendent Dr. Ron Ballard will lead the groundbreaking celebration along with Board of Education President Joe Woodard and new ACHS principal, Dr. David Zumwalt. Following the brief event, those involved will break ground for the project.

The project architect is Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey. Hutton Construction is serving as the project’s construction manager at-risk.
