Police up presence after fights, threats in AC

Fights and threats of violence at Arkansas City High School have prompted an increased police presence at the school, a district official said.

"The police department is aware of the rumors and the extra security at the high school is strictly precautionary," Alisha Call, who handles public relations for USD 470, said. "The safety of our students and staff is the district’s number one priority and we are taking the appropriate steps to prevent an issue from occurring."

Ark City police Capt. Tom Scott has confirmed that police beefed up their presence after fighting earlier in the week. There also were reports of violent threats being made, he said in an interview with KSOK Radio.

District and law enforcement officials said there have been questions and numerous phone calls from parents concerning the threats.

Students involved in the earlier fighting are not attending school at this time, Call said.
