Two people were arrested and jailed Saturday after fleeing on foot from a routine traffic stop in Arkansas City, police said.
Shanon S. Beckner, 40, was driving a vehicle stopped for a defective equipment violation in 2700 block of N. Summit. Beckner provided police with a phony name and took off on foot when asked to step out of his vehicle.
A brief pursuit ensued and officers used a Taser to control the suspect so he could be taken into custody.
Just as he was being restrained, Beckner is said to have shoved a baggie into his mouth containing a substance determined to be meth. He eventually spit out the baggie.
Beckner required treatment at a hospital for ingesting an unknown quantity of meth. It was at this point officers determined his true identity and learned he also had been driving on a suspended driver’s license.
Beckner faces charges of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony obstruction and driving on a suspended license. He was booked into the county jail and his bond is set at $9,500.
State corrections records show Beckner is a convicted felon.
A female subject in the back seat of the vehicle ran as Beckner was being chased.
Police were able to locate the suspect, Eugenia Sester, 31, and she was arrested on a felony obstruct charge and outstanding warrants in Ark City and Kay Co., Okla.
Sester is also a convicted felon.
A third passenger in the vehicle, Shawn Cameron, was cited for transporting an open container and released from the scene.
