County to address more nuisance properties

Cowley County commissioners will hold a public hearing to determine if two pieces of property are public nuisances during their regularly scheduled meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday on the first floor of the county courthouse.

One property is located at 13949 121st Road and is owned by Walker L. and Jackie? Sharp and Jerry L. and Marjorie I. Crow. It is currently occupied by Keith Peacock, according to the commission agenda. Untagged vehicles, vegetation and debris are the basis for the complaint.

The second piece is located at 1592 K-15 in Udall and owned by John R. and? Edna L. Jones. Trash and debris are listed as the concerns.

Four other properties listed as outstanding nuisances will be reviewed to determine progress being made by the property owners.

Commissioners will also discuss applying for funding for two additional sheriff’s deputies through President Obama’s new stimulus plan.

The funds commissioners are to consider applying for will pay for 5,500 additional law enforcement officer jobs across the country. An application to the U.S. Department of Justice would request funding for two additional deputy positions in the county sheriff’s department.

Funds awarded provide 100 percent of entry-level salary and benefits for each officer for three years. The jurisdictions that receive funding must plan to retain the positions after federal funding ends. No local match is required, according to information provided by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Sheriff Don Read wants to fund a school resource officer for the three high schools in rural parts of the county. There are no resource officers currently available in the three schools.

The officer would rotate schools one day a week and perform patrol duties the other two days. The second position would involve an officer to participate in a new Drug Court program in District Court and Community Corrections. The first session is to be April 16.

Meetings are open to the public.
