Train strikes car on tracks near Winfield Mon.

A Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train struck a vehicle stuck on tracks just south of Winfield early Monday, according to the Cowley County Sheriff’s Department. Nobody was injured.

The driver, Bryan Bell, 48, Winfield, was traveling northeast on Leed Road before attempting to turn south onto 81st Road. Bell took a wide turn, left the road and lost control of the vehicle before becoming stuck on the tracks.

Bell and a passenger, Brent Hogue, 50, Winfield, attempted to remove the car from the tracks but soon noticed a train coming. Hogue is listed as the owner of the vehicle.

Hogue and Bell abandoned their efforts to move the vehicle and fled to a safe distance as the train struck the car.

A deputy at the scene said road conditions were slightly muddy due to rain but not enough to be hazardous.

The incident occurred just after 6 a.m.

The approximate location of the accident is shown below. Leed Road is labeled as Glenville Corners.
