Estes talks budget cuts with state lawmakers

Winfield schools superintendent Marvin Estest told lawmakers in Topeka Tuesday that school administrators would like to know sooner rather than later if additional budget cuts are necessary.

Estes addressed the appropriations committee of the Kansas House of Representatives, which is looking for ideas on ways to cut spending with budget shortfalls looming. Winfield’s superintendent told the committee he feels like it would require significant effort to cut school spending even more.

"We’ve cut all the things that we feel that we can," Estes told reporters.

The committee heard from a group of superintendents about creative ways to cut spending.

Estes said the current funding situation has led to increased class sizes and less support staff for students.

"We should have classes of 18 for kindgarten," he said. "Already we’re seeing classes of 23 or 24."
