Harmless piece of old bomb found at Strother

Explosives experts from McConnell Air Force Base were at Strother Field Wednesday to help dispose of what turned out to be a harmless component of an old bomb, Cowley County undersheriff Bill Mueller said.

A contractor hired by the government to search former military facilities for contamination and aging debris found the item in a field north of the Strother airport.

The item itself was not an explosive device but rather a component of one. It had been in a field that has been farmed for many years, so Mueller believes it was moved and run over many times.

Explosive ordinance personnel from McConnell traveled to Strother Field and removed the item.
