4th dist. candidate Kelsey in Winfield Friday

A town hall meeting with State Sen. Dick Kelsey, R-Goddard, is set for Friday morning at Deets Library on the campus of Southwestern College.

Kelsey represents the 26th district of the state Senate but has announced his candidacy for the U.S. 4th Distric Congressional seat that will open in 2010 due to Rep. Todd Tiahrt’s decision to run for a Senate post.

The town hall meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. Kelsey will discuss health care and federal standing. His talk will be followed by a question and answer session.

Kelsey has served as a Kansas legislator for five years now, four in the House and is currently serving in the Senate.

He is married to his wife, Doris, and they live close to Goddard. Together they have six children and 13 grandchildren.

He has a master’s degree in education administration, and has worked as a pastor, a school administrator, and a businessman. He is on the board of directors of Barclay College in Haviland and currently owns or co-owns five businesses including The King’s Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers.

"It is an important event because students and members of the community will have to make a political choice and they need to be aware of different candidates and platforms to make an informed decision," Jean Gabriel Jolivet, assistant professor of political science at Southwestern, said.?

The event is sponsored by the department of political science and legal studies at SC and there is no admission charge.?
