Wellington shooting involved pair of students

Students from Wellington were involved in a shooting Nov. 19 that left a 14-year-old boy with minor injuries, Wellington police chief Tracy Heath said.

An investigation into the incident ? which went unreported for four days ? is ongoing and police expect to submit the case to the Sumner County Attorney for review. The shooting happened in the 1400 block of High Drive.

No one has been arrested.

The department’s school resource officer received information about the incident on Nov. 23 and was told to initiate an investigation, Heath said. So far those involved have told police the shooting was accidental.

Police have determined the shooting involved two 14-year-old boys and began when one of the boys produced a 22-caliber rifle. Heath said it’s not clear why rifle was brought out and would not comment on reports that one child in particular had been playing around and brandishing the gun.

The gun discharged and one of the juveniles was struck in the right foot. Several others juveniles were at the residence when the shooting occurred and police are interviewing those involved.

Police have not released the names of anyone involved in the incident.

Heath said it is illegal to discharge a weapon in the city limits under current Wellington ordinances. It’s too soon to know if more serious charges will be filed, he said.

"We’re in the course of gathering information," he said. "We want to get to the bottom of this."

Sumner County Attorney Evan Watson was unfamiliar with the case and said his office had yet to receive a report for review.
