Porter: City drafting fairground beer ordinance

Commissioners in Winfield have asked city staff to develop drafts of an ordinance that would allow the sale of beer at the local fairgrounds, city manager Warren Porter said.

"They want to see what an ordinance would look like," Porter said. "So that’s what we’re working on."

NewsCow reported earlier this month that officials with the Country Roundup were pursuing plans to sell beer in the midway area at the fairground. Organizers made that request official at a commission work session nearly two weeks ago.

In recent years, commissioners have loosened regulations regarding consumption at the fairground but continued to prohibit sales. Events at the fairground need case-by-case approval before allowing the drinking of cereal malt beverages ? a slightly weaker version of beer ? in the grandstand area.

Porter expects the same type of temporary permit ? granted on a case by case basis to events that have been fully vetted ? to be required for beer sales. Roundup organizers are seeking to sell so-called full-strength beer.

Porter did not provide specifics about when commissioners might vote on a beer sales proposal.
