Woman hurt in U.S. 77 wreck remains critical

A young woman injured in a fatality accident near Strother Field Tuesday remained in critical condition early Wednesday, according to a spokesperson at Wesley Medical Center.

Leah Logan, 22, Caldwell, was the driver of a 1998 Buick that collided with a semi-truck at the intersection of U.S. 77 and 222nd Rd. around 9:30 a.m. Maxwell R. Martin, 21, of rural Cowley County, was a passenger in the car and died at the scene.

Logan was westbound on 222nd Rd. when she failed to yield at a stop sign and entered the south bond lane of traffic on highway 77, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

The Buick was broadsided by a southbound, 1993 Peterbilt semi that was being driven by Ellis D. Mortenson, 57, Harper.

Mortenson was not injured in the accident. Neither Logan nor Martin were wearing seat belts, according to the report. The semi struck their vehicle on Martin’s side.

Martin lived within a couple miles of where the accident took place, according to information from law enforcement officials.

Logan was extricated from the vehicle and taken by air ambulance to Wichita.
