UPDATE: Man involved in wreck has died

UPDATE 2:15 p.m. Wednesday: Authorities say it was Gerald Ehmke, 91, Winfield, who was involved in the accident on 152nd Rd. Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to the local hospital and later died.

It is believed the man was affected by a medical condition, ? maybe some type of attack ? drove off the road in his four-door Lincoln passenger car, and died, undersheriff Bill Mueller said. He was eastbound on 152nd, veered off the roadway and hit a tree.

Ehmke lived in the area for years and had just visited the local co-op. He presumably was returning home when the crash occurred.

"We don’t know for certain but it appears he had some sort of attack," Mueller said. "He was driving on a flat surface and the car just veered off the road. He wouldn’t have been driving very fast, he never did. And there were cuts and scrapes, but no real major injuries caused by the wreck."
