Police dispatchers in Ark City will soon be able to receive text message tips in an effort to appeal to teens and others who may be less likely to make a phone call to report a crime.
The AC Tips program is set to begin Aug. 9 and will let dispatchers receive anonymous texts from the public. Texters can even send a photo along with the message if it helps police to work a case, according to a statement from police chief Sean Wallace.
Messages should be sent to tip411, which is 847411.
The text line is open to those wanting to offer information and tips about a crime. Wallace said someone wishing to report an emergency situation still should call 911, to avoid any delays.
The service will be offered in partnership with the web-based company Citizen Observer. Wallace said the tips are 100 percent anonymous and added that not even a search warrant could lead to a texters identity.
Dispatchers are able to reply to texts if clarification is needed or questions have to be asked.
The program is aimed particularly at high-school students, but should be useful to the general public as well. Police hope students will be more likely to text a tip when they see something that jeopardizes safety at school
Wallace also cited a recent bomb scare at a business in Ark City as an instance where AC Tips could come in handy.
