Police: Drunk driver damaged parked vehicles

A Newkirk man was arrested for DUI Saturday afternoon after a witness reported he was driving erratically and dinging up several parked cars, according to a report from Ark City police.

Gilbert Henry Rippe, 61, was southbound on Eighth St. in Ark City when someone called to report a hit and run in the 700 block. A motorist informed dispatchers that they were following a driver that had hit the car and drove on, striking more vehicles.

Sometime just after noon, officers caught up with Rippe’s vehicle at Summit and Madison, where Rippe rolled backward a bit and bumped into a patrol car. The damage to the police cruiser was minor.

Rippe continued east on Madison as officers attempted to pull him over. Eventually he came to a stop in the 600 block of South A.

He was arrested and charged with DUI, transporting an open bottle of beer, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of a non-injury accident, failure to report an accident and an outside warrant.
