Verizon store closing; agent store is opening

Verizon Wireless will close its retail location in Winfield this fall and the store on Main will become an agent location operating under the name Cellular Sales, a Verizon official confirmed Thursday.

The Verizon store’s final day of operation is Oct. 2 and Cellular Sales will open for business the following day, says Brenda Hill, a Verizon spokesperson. Hill would not comment on the closing except to say that the decision was made to improve operational efficiencies.

Hill says existing Verizon customers will not be affected by the change.

Verizon remodelled the store, located at 907 Main, when the company purchased cell provider Alltel in 2009.

As an agent location, Cellular Sales will still offer Verizon phones and service plans. The new store, however, will not be operated by Verizon.

The Winfield location was the only Verizon operated store in Cowley County.

Verizon employs just under 10 people locally. It will be up to Cellular Sales to decide which employees are retained, Hill says.
