Winfield fire chief Curtis Wilson retiring in Dec.

Winfield Fire Chief Curtis Wilson will retire just before the end of the year.

Wilson, 56, has served the local fire department for more than 10 years. His last day is scheduled for the week of Dec. 13.

Spending more time with his family ? including twin grandchildren that are on the way ? will be a main focus post retirement, the chief said Wednesday.

Wilson served 22 years in firefighting in Sedgwick County before arriving in Winfield. After 32 years, retirement plans for firefighters are maxed out, so now seemed to be the best time to step down, he said.

On Wilson’s watch, the city has improved its fire safety rating, obtained more modern equipment and remodeled an aging fire station. He listed those as the achievements of which he is most proud.

"It’s been a lot fun," he said. "We’ve been able to do a lot of good things in regard to training and equipment."

City manager Warren Porter praised Wilson’s work. It’s unclear so far when a search for a new chief might begin.

Porter said the city will lose an asset in Chief Wilson.

"He’s done an excellent job," Porter said. "I told him he could stay on in some capacity if he wanted to. But he’s ready to retire, and I don’t blame him."
