Fire guts garage and camper Mon. in Winfield

Fire officials are working to determine the cause of a fire that caused thousands in damage to a garage and camper trailer in Winfield Monday afternoon.

The out buildings ? at 610 E. Third ? were directly behind a home owned by Lowell and Barbara Shrubshall. No one was injured, though Mr. Shrubshall was taken to the hospital for a short time as a precaution.

The home was not damaged.

A tower of thick black smoke rose from a fire that quickly gutted the garage, camper and a structure covering the camper. The fire began around 4:30 p.m. and was under control by 5 p.m., but fire personnel were on scene for several more hours.

Fire marshal Alan Stoll ? who spoke with NewsCow briefly at the scene ? said he would need to investigate and review information from the scene to determine a cause.

At least two cylinders of propane and other flammable liquids were inside the garage, which was filled with a number of tools and equipment. A KSOK reporter at the scene said some explosions were audible as the blaze burned.
