UPDATE: Woman in train, car crash has died

UPDATE: 4:20 p.m., Monday – Janelle McKinney has died from injuries received Saturday when her car collided with a train, family and authorities confirm.

McKinney died just after 11 a.m. at Wesley Medical Center.


UPDATE: 10:18 p.m., Monday – A rural Winfield woman remains in critical condition Monday, following a car and train collision in Hackney Township.

Janelle A. McKinney, 38, suffered head, neck and other injuries as result of the accident Saturday. She is listed in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Cowley County Sheriff Don Read said little is known about how the accident occurred. McKinney crossed tracks on 71st Rd. and entered the pathway of a northbound train.

Investigators suspect inattentive driving but know nothing for certain, Read said.

"Obviously we haven’t had a chance to speak with her, due to her injuries," he said. "From what we’ve been told she’s in very critical condition."


A woman was critically injured Saturday afternoon when the car she was driving collided with a train in rural Cowley County.

The woman was transported by air ambulance to a Wichita hospital. Her condition at this time is not known.

The accident occurred on 71st Rd. near Strother Field in Hackney Township. The train was operated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

Investigators have yet to release details in regard to how the accident occurred. There is no crossing gate at the location where the collision took place.

The collision was reported around 12:30 p.m.
