Police: AC man fatally injured by fallen vehicle

Ark City police have released details in the death of a man killed over the weekend as a result of injuries suffered when a car the man was working on fell onto him.

The man was not identified by police but NewsCow has confirmed he was Michael J. Brown, 38, Ark City. Funeral services are set for later today.

Around 3 p.m. Saturday, police arrived at a home on N. Fourth St. to a report that a vehicle had fallen on top of someone. A neighbor provided police with the man’s name and officers attempted to speak to the pinned man, but received no response.

The vehicle’s two front wheels had been removed and it appeared Brown had been working on the vehicle. His legs were sticking out from under the vehicle when police arrived.

Officers and a neighbors used a scissor jack to lift the car off of Brown. It was estimated the man had spent two or three minutes under the vehicle. Brown’s face was flush, he was not breathing and cold to the touch after the vehicle was removed.

Officers immediately began CPR on the man, with assistance from an emergency medical crew.

Brown was treated medically and continued to receive CPR. As he was loaded into an ambulance, he began breathing on his own, according to a report of the incident.

He was eventually taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment of his injuries and had stabilized. He continued to breathe on his own for sometime. Brown died of his injuries early Sunday.

Police Chief Sean Wallace acknowledged the work of officers and neighbors who moved in quickly to assist the victim. Wallace also urged people working on their vehicle to take every precaution to secure the vehicle before getting underneath to perform service.

Brown’s death marked the second time this year a man was pinned and killed while servicing a vehicle in Cowley County.
