Caldwell man killed in wreck west of Ark City

A Caldwell man died Friday night from injuries sustained when his vehicle crossed the center line of U.S. 166 highway and collided with a semi truck midway between Arkansas City and South Haven.

Russell W. Engel, 46, was westbound in his 2001 Chevrolet when he crossed the center line and hit an eastbound 1998 Peterbilt driven by Nathan R. Romaker, 31, Dodge City, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Romaker was uninjured.

Engel was taken to Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita and later died.

The accident happened just after 10:40 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 166 and Rock Rd. in Sumner County.
