Cowley, Sumner to form SWAT team

An agreement approved by Cowley County commissioners Tuesday provides the framework for a Special Weapons and Tactics team to serve the county.

Sheriff’s departments in Sumner and Cowley counties will work together on the project. The team will be based in Sumner County and be able to respond to high-risk and critical law enforcement situations.

SWAT officers are more highly trained and are able use more sophisticated weaponry.

The agreement calls for Sumner County to provide the base organization, training and supervision of the SWAT team. The Cowley County department will provide deputies for training and response to incidents.

The city of Winfield has two officers in training, said Undersheriff Don Read. It will be up to the sheriff to decide whether to honor requests, he said.
