A Cowley County man ? driving to Hutchinson for the county to pick up shooting suspect Austin T. Brownell ? was injured Wednesday morning when he flipped a county van in Wichita.
Larry Whitney was listed in fair condition this morning at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, according to a hospital spokesperson. The accident occurred around 6 a.m. as Whitney drove on I-135 near the K-96 interchange.
Whitney ? a transport officer for the county ? was heading to Hutchinson to pick up Brownell, who is accused of shooting Angela Krepps at her home this summer, undersheriff Bill Mueller said.
He was using a sheriff’s department van, which is not uncommon for those picking up suspects in other jurisdictions, according to Mueller.
The accident has delayed proceedings in the Brownell case, but the a hearing on whether to charge Brownell as an adult was expected to resume later today.
Whitney was the only person in the vehicle at the time.
