Victim in Wichita shooting had Cowley ties

A former Cambridge woman has been identified as the victim of a shooting in Wichita Monday evening.

Amy Lynn Whiteman, 36, graduated from Central Burden High School in 1989 and had held jobs in Winfield before relocating to Wichita. Whiteman’s parents and many family members still reside in Cowley County.

According to police and news reports, Whiteman’s husband shot and killed Whiteman before going to a police substation and surrendering to authorities. Police arrived at the couple’s home to find the woman dead.

Cowley County authorities said the Whitemans saw the news on television before authorities could notify them.

Sgt. Tom Campbell of the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office said apparently a television crew began filming the investigation as it was unfolding. The Whitemans saw the coverage and called the local police dispatcher to see if local authorities had any information.

The dispatcher contacted the sheriff’s office. Campbell called the Wichita Police Department and gathered as much information as available at that time for the family.

“It’s not really anybody’s fault. I know all the agencies were doing their job,” Campbell said. “It was just unfortunate timing.”

A memorial scholarship fund for Central Burden High School has been established in Whiteman’s name. Contact Miles Funeral Service of Winfield for more information.
