Many local officials yet to file for reelection

Neither of Cowley County’s two state representatives or the county’s senator have filed for reelection. Nor has anyone else jumped in to challenge Rep. Kasha Kelley R-Arkansas City, Rep. Ed Trimmer, D-Winfield, or Sen. Greta Goodwin, D-Winfield, should they run for additional terms.

The filing deadline is noon June 10.

Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith has not filed for a second four-year term. He said several weeks ago he hasn’t decided whether he will run for re-election. No one else has filed for the position either.

County commissioner Gary Wilson, D-Ark City, is running unopposed. Commissioner Carmelita Clarkson, D-Winfield, is being challenged by John Mars, D-Ark City.

Clerk Karen Brooks, Treasurer Kathy Foust, and Register of Deeds Nancy Horst are seeking new terms and face no opposition.

Two Republicans are seeking the sheriff’s post held by Bob Odell. He has decided not to run again. His undersheriff, Don Read, is seeking the job and so is former police officer Randy Emerson.

The 25 townships have less than half the number of candidates needed for each township to have a trustee and treasurer. In the last few days, Johnnie Brookings has filed for Ninnescah treasurer, Janene Follmer has filed for Liberty Township treasurer, Harold Doyle for Ninnescah trustee.
