Wellington student dead; alcohol suspected

Investigators suspect alcohol played a role in the death of an 18-year-old student from Wellington found unresponsive Friday in a dorm bathroom on the campus of Coffeyville Community College.

Austin Lee Slanker-Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a written statement from the Coffeyville Police Department. He was found in Quad 39 of the male dorm just after 7 a.m.

Slanker-Wilson attended Wellington High School until he was a sophomore before attending Oxford High School. He graduated from OHS this spring.

Police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene after receiving the report of an unresponsive male a restroom at the college.

Preliminary information indicates consumption of alcohol was a contributing factor in the young man’s death, police said. There are no indications of foul play.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the Shawnee County Medical Examiner’s Office in Topeka. Investigators plan to offer more information as it is available.

Slanker-Wilson had graduated high school earlier this year and was at Coffeyville on an agriculture scholarship.
