UPDATE: Douglass man now in fair condition

UPDATE: 10:06 a.m. Thursday – A Wesley spokesperson said Simon was in fair condition his morning.

A Douglass man was injured Wednesday afternoon when the truck and stock trailer he was driving collided with a semi truck west of Winfield, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Kenneth R. Simon, 70, was taken to Wesley Medical Center. Information about his condition was not immediately available but Simon was trapped in his vehicle for a time.

The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. at the intersection of 142nd Road and 11th Road between Winfield and Oxford. The intersection is about one-and-one-quarter miles north of U.S. 160 and has gotten more use lately while Cowley 3 undergoes safety improvements.

Simon was eastbound on 142nd Road when his vehicle collided with a Daniels Ready-Mix semi-truck and dump trailer driven by Anthony Charvat, 28, Winfield. Charvat spoke briefly with NewsCow and said neither driver had a yield or stop sign at the intersection, which is near a cornfield that inhibits visibility.

"It’s basically a blind intersection," he said.

Charvat was wearing a seatbelt and Simon was not. Charvat received minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital, according to a written report.

A few head of cattle were in Simon’s stock trailer, their condition is not known.
