UPDATE: Severe weather alert is in effect

A significant weather alert was issued at 3:30 p.m. for Cowley and Sumner counties. A strong thunderstorm near Geuda Springs was being tracked by the weather service. It was moving north. Winds up to 50 miles an hour was reported.

Another storm near Newkirk was being watched It was also moving north and may move east of Ark City.

No other warnings were in effect although the possibility to severe weather with isolated tornadoes was predicted for this area. A wind advisory was also issued in effect from midnight to 9 a.m. Wednesday. Wind guest up to 40 miles an hour may develop.

A large tornado was televised as it moved on the ground near Oklahoma City this afternoon.

It’s only February but the area may experience the first severe weather of the year this afternoon and tonight.

The National Weather Service has warned that severe thunderstorms with large hail and isolated tornadoes are possible across south central and southeast Kansas. The greatest threat should be between 6 p.m. and midnight.

The area includes Butler, Greenwood, Sedgwick, Sumner, Cowley, Elk and Chautauqua counties.

A high grassland fire danger is also a concern across much of the area today.

Weather spotters may be need this evening across south central and southeast Kansas.
