UPDATE: Injured motorcycle rider is named

A man was injured late Thursday when his motorcycle struck a deer carcass in the road just south of Winfield on U.S. 77 Highway, according to police.

Richard Folk, 37, Arkansas City, was transported to William Newton Hospital and later transferred to Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He was listed in serious condition this morning, a hospital spokesperson said. The accident occurred around 9:25 p.m.

The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Cowley County Undersheriff Bill Mueller said.

Winfield police and sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene to find that a 2004 Dodge pickup, driven by Lucas Guffee, 25, Winfield, had struck and killed a deer in the northbound lane of U.S. 77.

Guffee pulled over to the side of the road to check his vehicle when Folk came up over a hill on his Harley Davidson and struck the animal carcass, which was still in the roadway.

Folk was thrown from the motorcycle but a helmet and riding leathers helped to prevent life-threatening injury, according to an officer at the scene.
The bike came to a stop on it’s side in the northeast-bound lane of traffic in which Folk had been traveling.
