1 hurt as cars collide at Winfield intersection

Two people were hospitalized Tuesday evening when vehicles they were driving collided at an unmarked intersection in a south-Winfield neighborhood, police said.

An officer at the scene said one driver was injured but able to speak with emergency personnel before being taken to the hospital in Winfield. A second driver was uninjured but taken by personal vehicle to the hospital as a precaution, according to police Sgt. Chris Roark.

Police have yet to name either person involved in the accident. Roark said injuries to the first person – the driver of a green Chevorlet Blazer – were not believed to be life threatening.

Firefighters had to free the woman from her vehicle.

The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. as the Blazer, heading west on Elizabeth, met a brown, four-door sedan traveling south on Ritchie.

The vehicles collided and impact caused the Blazer’s tires to grab and jerk against the roadway, sending the vehicle out of control. It overturned and ended up on its top close to where the accident occurred, Roark said.

Investigators were reviewing evidence from the scene to determine whether citations were warranted. The intersection was not controlled by traffic signs or signals. Roark said he believed that there had been a previous request made to add a stop sign at the intersection.
