1 dead, Winfield woman critical in ATV crash

A man was killed and a Winfield woman was critically injured in an accident late Saturday at the Kansas Badlands ATV park in Sumner County, authorities there said.

Matt Kelly, 40, of rural Peck, was pronounced dead at the scene some time after 11:15 p.m. Dovie Browning, 32, Winfield, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita in critical condition.

She remained in critical condition Sunday in the hospital’s surgical intensive care unit, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Kelly was operating an ATV with Browning as a passenger when the two attempted to jump a dirt mound at the park. The vehicle flipped several times and a rollbar on the vehicle collapsed, trapping the man and Browning, according to Sumner undersheriff Mike Yoder.

The pair were wearing seat belts but not helmets, he said.

Extrication equipment was used to remove both people from the wreckage. Alcohol may have played a factor in the incident, Yoder said, but an investigation is continuing.

Kansas Badlands officials declined an opportunity to comment on the crash.

"We’re not at liberty to discuss any of that at this time," a woman who identified herself only as a company official, said Sunday.

The Badlands is located near South Haven.
