Dog named Lee picked as Ark City’s K-9 unit

Ark City police have chosen a Belgium Malinois dog ? named Lee ? as the department’s first K-9 officer, according to chief Sean Wallace.

Wallace and future K-9 handler Eric Mata were recently in San Antonio, Tex. to choose a dog at the Hill Country Dog Center. Lt. Kyle Moomau, commander of the Kansas Highway Patrol K-9 United, accompanied Wallace and Mata, tested several dogs and made recommendations.

Lee, 2, comes patrol-trained from Holland but he and Mata will undergo a 10-week training course offered by the highway patrol. The course teaches the dog tracking and drug-detection skills.

Wallace said Lee will be a large part of the effort to fight drug trafficking in Ark City.
