Smith: AC county attorney branch could close

Cowley County officials are mulling plans for relocating the county attorney’s office that could include closing the branch office in Ark City, county attorney Chris Smith said Friday.

"It’s under consideration, I think that’s what I can say at this point," Smith said. "No final decision has been made."

Moving some county offices from the courthouse in Winfield to the former bank building across the street has opened office space at the courthouse. Smith said there have been discussions about moving the county attorney’s office from its current location in the courthouse to that empty space.

A plan discussed included closing the Ark City office at 119 S. Summit. The county attorney office currently runs locations in Winfield and Ark City.

"Like any other department, we have to live within our budget and operate as efficiently as possible," Smith said. "And so we’re looking at everything."
